HABITAT TECHNICIANS

Summer Contract

Every summer, Ontario Streams hires 6-8 Habitat Technicians who will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the restoration field. These contract positions provide crucial field experience that will not only build your career, but will also provide you with skills and knowledge you will carry with you throughout your professional career.

PROJECT BIOLOGISTS

Full-time

Ontario Streams generally employs 2-3 Project Biologists to lead restoration projects through all planning, fundraising, implementation, and reporting phases. The Project Biologists lead our team of Habitat Technicians  in gaining valuable hand-on experience utilizing various environmental monitoring and restoration techniques, conservation education, and public outreach opportunities. 

OUTREACH COORDINATOR

Full-time

The Outreach Coordinator creates and develops educational and engaging resources for the community based on Ontario Streams' mission of healthier streams and wetlands in Ontario. By attending local festivals, delivering workshops and presentations, and hosting volunteer events, our Outreach Coordinator educates the public on conservation, species-at-risk, and habitat restoration.

GIS SPECIALIST

Contract

The GIS Technician contracts  use their skills in evaluating natural heritage features, such as wetlands and sensitive vegetation communities, in the field and through remote sensing, and then digitizing these in ArcMap. This position provides valuable experience in communications and technical report writing, developing highly transferable skills for your career.

Backpack Electrofishing Crew Lead Training

This course is intended for students and professionals who will be involved in stream surveys and fisheries management. The main focus is to ensure the safe use of the backpack electrofishing units. The course will cover: electrical theory, safety measures, and an in-field practical where you will demonstrate safe implementation in the field.

Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol 

Hosted by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority the Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol is a standardized method of stream evaluation used in the environmental field throughout Ontario. You will learn how to determine study sites, conduct species surveys such as benthic macroinvertebrate and fish community sampling, and assess stream physiology and morphology. This week long course will provide you with essential skills that will benefit anyone pursuing a career in aquatic biology.


Stream Rehabilitation Training

Trout Unlimited Canada offers a series of stream rehabilitation workshops which provide participants with the opportunity to learn the best practices of stream conservation and monitoring. The goal of this six-course certification program is to provide community members with knowledge from professionals, which they can take on and use in their own careers or day-to-day lives, ultimately benefiting their local streams and watersheds. 

Fish Identification Workshop 

If you are a fisheries biologist or a student registered in a fisheries biology program, the Royal Ontario Museum, Department of Natural History, is providing an opportunity to improve your fish identification skills. The workshops are designed primarily for professionals, technicians, field biologists, and environmental consultants -- but other interested individuals, including university and college students, are welcome.

Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network

The Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) is a tool coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, which allows streams, wetlands, and lakes to monitor aquatic macroinvertebrates. The presence/absence of macroinvertebrate species are indicators of water quality and watershed health, and also provides insight on fish and aquatic species habitat for food availability. Certification courses are available through: Lakehead University

Ontario Master Naturalist Program

The Ontario Master Naturalist Certificate Program is provided by Lakehead University in Orillia and Ontario Nature. It includes a eight-module course on a wide variety of environmental topics ranging from Ontario bird species identification to stream health biology, with approximately 40 hours of instruction by environmental professionals.
